Privacy

Plain English, because that's the point. In effect from the day this site began collecting anything.

What we collect

Only what you give us: your email address, and your first name and postcode if you choose to add them. If you write to us, we keep what you wrote.

Why

If you signed up, we email you once a month: what happened, what changed, and the one thing you can do about it. Your first name is used only to address those emails to you. A postcode is used only in counts — how many people in an electorate have signed up — so we can show a Member of Parliament how many of their voters want this fixed. We never publish an individual’s postcode. If you later tell us we may add your name in support of the policy-change proposals, we count it in the totals we publish and put to decision-makers; we show your name and suburb only if you separately said we may.

Where it lives

Our mailing list is kept with Action Network (actionnetwork.org), a mailing service used by campaign and advocacy groups. When you sign up, the form on our home page passes your details straight to our Action Network account, which sends the emails and handles unsubscribing. Action Network’s offices and computers are in the United States, so your details are stored there, outside Australia, under Action Network’s privacy policy. The list is ours: we do not sell it, trade it or share it with anyone else, and we keep no second copy of it on this site.

Leaving

Every email we send has an unsubscribe link that works with one click. Or send one email to updates@claimsdenied.au and we will remove you ourselves. A note that you unsubscribed is kept, so that you are not emailed again.

Seeing or correcting what we hold

Email updates@claimsdenied.au and we will tell you what we hold about you, correct it, or delete it.

This site

No advertising or social-media trackers. The site is served by Cloudflare, which keeps ordinary technical logs to run the service. The sign-up form uses Cloudflare’s bot check (Turnstile) so that the list is people, not scripts; it does not identify you. The home page includes a 2023 A Current Affair video: nothing loads from YouTube unless you choose to play it — from that point YouTube (Google) applies its own terms and cookies.

Counting visits

We count visits and clicks so we know which pages and which help lines people actually use. Two services do it, and neither uses cookies or follows you to other sites: Cloudflare Web Analytics (page views, referrers, country, device type) and Umami (which link was clicked — for example a crisis line or a guide). Neither sees your name; both are set so that we cannot identify you from what they record. Visits from the QR code on the banners are counted separately, so we know the signs are working.
